Sergio Cortes: More Michael Jackson Than Most

They say that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. That may be, but I have a hunch that expression was coined by some court jester who was caught making fun of the king behind his back. Bad humor back then could get your head removed. Even today, mocking someone just for the sake of entertainment can be risky. I guess it depends on the material, and the personality of the subject. The difference between flattery and ridicule is just the perception of the person being imitated. Either way, it’s gotten to be a whole separate category in the entertainment business.

I have seen my share of impersonators. I’ve been to Las Vegas a few times and watched them live. I usually don’t miss any when they appear on television. You see, in my youth I thought I was pretty good at it myself. Rich Little was my hero. When I was given the opportunity to research an article about Michael Jackson impersonator Sergio Cortes, I jumped. This is right up my alley. However, my landing was a little hard when I saw how little information there is on this guy. The search results were numerous, but most of them were just videos of him preforming. But holy crap, was he performing. He truly is the most convincing impersonator I have ever seen.

The rest of the search results offered little more than fan gossip and rumors. It seems Mr. Cortes has almost as much drama in his life as the original. What facts I can give you about Sergio, are as follows:

  • He was born July 30th, 1971.
  • He and his two brothers grew up in Barcelona, Spain.
  • He does have a home in Barcelona today.
  • His father was killed in a car accident sometime in the mid 90’s.
  • His nationality is Spanish, but he also speaks English, German, and French.
  • He enjoys graphic design, and is reportedly fairly good at it.

As I attempted to read between the lines, I realized that Sergio Cortes is much more like MJ than anyone knew. Not just his looks, his moves and his voice. He also is very shy, and a bit of a recluse. It seems like the notoriety that came with his success has made him value his privacy even more. Sound like someone else?. I sincerely hope there’s a happy ending this time.
