Tragedy Sparks Action
To truly understand Halvorssen you have to understand the politics of his country. Venezuela is a country mired in corruption and dominated firmly by dictatorships. For any citizen of Venezuela this is a grievance but for Halvorssen he has especially seen dictators and human rights violators impact his life on a personal scale.
It Runs In The Family
In the early 90s his father, Thor Halvorssen Hellum, was incarcerated to shutdown his investigation of money laundering and drug trafficking activity within the Venezuelan government. Although Hellum was eventually cleared of these charges this did not happen before he experienced beating and torture at the hand of his own government. Later in 2004 Halvorssen saw his mother, Hilda Mendoza, killed by supporters of Hugo Chavez during a referundum over questionable election results.
Taking A Stand
The impact this has had on his personal life caused Thor Halvorssen to create the Human Rights Foundation. Expanding his reach beyond his native homeland he knew he needed to confront human rights violations across the world.
Uniting activists around the world was certain to bring about the change he wanted. All Thor Halvorssen needed was to shed light on this atrocities and inspire people to fight for their own good.
